Annie Woods
Epithet: Worker in a Munitions factory
Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: Annie Woods was the daughter of a mariner from Four Roads, Port St Mary. In November 1915, work began on what would become Britain's largest cordite factory at Gretna in the Scottish borders. The factory employed predominantly women and the following year Annie left home to work there. The mixture of nitrogylcerene and gun cotton was known as 'the devil's porridge', and the work was highly dangerous. Often the girls lived in dormitories, with an older woman as matron to oversee their welfare. (Image ref: PG/14451/2).
